We are pleased to announce that Harkins was named General Contractor of the Year by the Eastern Pennsylvania chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), a national construction organization representing 22,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms. The award was presented on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at the 28th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards Gala in Norristown, PA. The General Contractor of the Year award recognizes the ABC member that has made the most significant contribution to merit construction in the region as a result of their corporate integrity, commitment to safety, professional development, client satisfaction, and fellow member votes.

“We are thrilled to accept our first General Contractor of the Year award,” said Harkins President and CEO Gary Garofalo. “Each and every one of our employees and partners in the Northeast region have contributed to this achievement and we are proud to share this award with all of them.”

Verde II at Howard Square Tops Out

Milestone reached! The Verde II at Howard Square project celebrated its topping out with a luncheon and site tours on Wednesday, November 28th. The Harkins team was joined by over 100 subcontractors for a catered lunch from Mission BBQ.

Located in Elkridge, MD, this new two-building mixed use project is the second phase of the Verde community. It will provide 344 apartments, 750 structured parking spaces, and over 20,000 sf of retail space along the Route 1 corridor in Howard County.The interior amenity spaces, including a great room with a full kitchen, a game room, a business center, a fitness center, and a leasing office, are about ready for furniture while the units are in various stages of construction.

The project broke ground in August 2017, and completion is anticipated by Summer 2019.

Metro Heights Celebrates Grand Opening

The Harkins team attended the grand opening of Metro Heights at Mondawmin on Thursday, November 29th in Baltimore, MD.

Located at the intersection of Reisterstown Road and Liberty Heights Avenue, Metro Heights is a new landmark building that offers 70 apartments for the area’s workforce. The four-story wood frame building was built over a one-level cast-in-place garage and offers a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom affordable and market rate units.

The site was previously comprised of 12 vacant and abandoned lots and structures, totaling around one acre. This particular area in Baltimore has been a major focus of redevelopment, encompassing residential, retail, office, institutional, and cultural project types. Metro Heights will serve as a landmark in the community and a source of hope, opportunity and pride for residents, neighbors, and visitors to the area.

It was built to LEED Silver standards, creating a healthier and more energy efficient environment for the residents. The units include Energy Star windows and appliances, high-efficiency heating and ventilation systems, water-conserving plumbing, and stormwater management. Resident amenities include in-unit washers and dryers, a club room on the top floor, a game room, a business center, a fitness room and yoga studio, and 33 on-site parking spaces.

It is situated within walking distance of Mondawmin Mall, the Parks and People Foundation campus, and Druid Hill Park, along with many transit hubs.
