rescuing historic Poe houses and more
Development of this award-winning student housing project included estimating, design, and proposal assistance from Harkins. The project called for construction of a new 16-story residence hall and renovation of four historic buildings, all within the southern half of a block bounded by Paca, Fayette, and Greene Streets in downtown Baltimore.
Three townhouses, known as the Poe Houses, are located at the gateway to the complex, and house the leasing offices. To the east is a cluster of three buildings that were consolidated into one, made up of the Baltimore General Dispensary (on the National Registry of Historic Places), Eddy House, and the Century Building. Thirteen units of varying sizes house 50 students here, and a new lobby serving all three buildings was built. Entry to this cluster and to the tower is from a fenced central courtyard.
How Harkins Made a Difference
- All four historic structures had different exterior and interior construction requirements, and two sides of the Poe Houses were ready to collapse. Coordinating the many subcontractors involved with several building types was one of the many large challenges we are proud to have met.
- Students were moving in, as scheduled, for the beginning of their fall semester.
