Mary Taylor House at The Hickman

Mary Taylor House represented the expansion of The Hickman, a Quaker-sponsored assisted living facility, to include independent living. Sixty new apartments for low to moderate income seniors were constructed in this three-and-a-half-story wood frame building. The most striking feature of the new construction is a 70-foot bridge that spans East Biddle Street to connect the new independent and old assisted living buildings.

The building is clad with a variety of materials, including stone, HardiePanel, and brick in a pattern that matches the original building. Amenities include a library with wainscoting and a fireplace, a large management area with offices, a commercial kitchen, a terraced garden and courtyard, and a fitness and wellness room. The 16,000 sf building footprint was capped entirely with a green roof with stone walkways, the first of its kind in West Chester.

How Harkins Made a Difference
  • The bridge was constructed offsite, then dismantled and brought to the site for installation. The site team coordinated closely with local school and transportation authorities to make sure buses would be rerouted, ensuring the safety of the community.
