Harkins is proud to be providing design-build construction services, along with VOA Architects and Stanmyre + Noel Architects, for new student quarters, training facilities, and support facilities at The Basic School for student officers at Marine Base Quantico in Virginia. The phased project began with Manion Hall in 2008, and when construction is complete on the third of three contracts, Harkins will have put over $130 million of construction in place over four years.
Construction of Manion Hall and Haas Hall is complete. Altogether, four dormitory buildings will provide a total of 976 beds for student officers. The typical structure is precast concrete plank bearing on CMU walls, with CMU partition walls and metal trusses. The buildings have blast-resistant windows, brick veneer, and a metal roof. All buildings meet Anti-Terrorist/Force Protection and Progressive Collapse requirements, and the structures are being built to LEED NC Silver specifications.
A state-of-the-art training facility is part of the current Phase II construction. It has auditoriums in a one-story section and administration offices in a two-story section. The exterior is brick, highlighted with decorative precast, and the roof is standing seam metal to match the adjacent structures.
Construction on the latest phase is scheduled to start in March of 2011. Construction includes the fourth dormitory building and a 400-seat dining hall and a media center.
