This design-build 52-unit townhouse project is located on Andrews Air Force Base, and is part of a major replacement housing initiative on base. The project was delayed in the early design phase as Harkins and our design team worked with NAVFAC and the Air Force architects to rework both the unit designs and site layout. Through partnering and extraordinary joint efforts, the team was able to achieve a unit and site layout that met the client’s expectations.
The project consisted of total demolition and replacement of the existing housing and infrastructure, including new utility distribution, new roads, and units consisting of vinyl siding exteriors with front porches, decks, decorative elements including fish scale siding and Fypon features. The site design accommodated several large specimen trees and was complemented with new walking paths, landscaping, and renovated tot lots. The project finished on schedule.
Harkins has extensive experience with design-build housing for the military, with projects at Bolling AFB, Quantico Marine Base, various installations in the Norfolk area, and recently at Ft. Detrick, where HCM was also part of the team.
Andrews Air Force Base is located in Prince George’s County just outside the Washington, D.C. beltway to the southeast. The primary mission at Andrews AFB is to transport the president of the United States, and the base is also tasked to provide reliable and comfortable worldwide airlift for the vice president, the president’s Cabinet, members of Congress, military leaders and other high ranking dignitaries.
