We promote community service and charitable giving.
We share with the community, both as a company and through employees as individuals.
We encourage each employee to commit to worthwhile community and professional organizations.
Blase Cooke Classic
Named for our late president, this premiere golf tournament provides an opportunity for many business and community leaders to come together and enjoy a great day of golf and friendly competition. Corporate Sponsor teams compete for the Corporate Cup. Each team plays for a different Catholic Charities program and the winning team has the opportunity to present a contribution to that program.
Blase Cooke House
In 2009 Harkins purchased a house in Columbia, Maryland, organized a renovation effort with employees and subcontractors, and made it possible for an employee of Howard County to live affordably in a comfortable dwelling near their place of work.
Our relationship with the Catholic community was established by our founder, Thomas P. Harkins, and was strengthened by his successors. Catholic Charities is the largest private provider of human services in the state of Maryland, helping more than 160,000 individuals each year, and Harkins is proud to be a supporter of a number of their programs. We are a platinum sponsor of the bi-annual Dragon Boat Races, which is a major fundraiser for the organization and an event in which a significant percentage of our employees personally participate.
After many years under the leadership of Dick Lombardo, the Gallagher Golf Tournament is now chaired by Harkins Senior Project Manager Brad Cook. The annual event raises significant operating funds for the Gallagher Family Fund, a program for people with developmental disabilities.
Habitat for Humanity
Harkins has participated in Habitat for Humanity projects in Hagerstown and Baltimore, most notably the “House that Harkins Built” in Baltimore’s Govans neighborhood. To commemorate our 50th Anniversary, Harkins partnered with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake to completely renovate an abandoned property on McCabe Avenue for a single father and his two young sons.
Health Care for the Homeless
Each winter, Harkins employees participate in a winter clothing drive to benefit Health Care for the Homeless, donating warm coats and winter accessories for children and adults affected by homelessness in the city of Baltimore.
Howard Community College
Over the years, Harkins has sponsored fundraising events for scholarships at Howard Community College, including: the HCC Columbia Classic Grand Prix since 2002, the Vino Scholastico wine tasting event since its inception in 2008, the Hunan Manor fundraiser for Silas Craft Collegians, the 5K Challenge Race, and the President’s Galas. Harkins Vice President Mike Drummond currently serves as an advocate for students on the HCC Education Foundation as board chair and as an adjunct faculty in the construction management department.
Jeans for Charity Day
Twice a month in our main office headquarters, employees contribute $5 towards a charity, suggested by an employee, for the privilege of wearing jeans that day.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
Harkins employees are always pleased to field a team in the JDRF Real Estate Games, an annual event sponsored by the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to raise funds for Type 1 Diabetes research.
Light the Night
An event organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Harkins is a major participant and fundraiser in the Baltimore edition of this program. We walk in this annual event in honor of our founder, Thomas P. Harkins.
Rebuilding Together Howard County
Contributing our abilities as builders, our employees and their families complete a two-day extreme home makeover each spring to provide safety and comfort upgrades for a low-income family in Howard County, Maryland.
Rebuilding Together Montgomery County
In the spring of 2016, Harkins built a Hobbit-themed children’s playhouse for Rebuilding Hope: The RTMC Playhouse Project. The playhouse was auctioned off to raise funds for Rebuilding Together Montgomery County to be able to provide free critical home repairs, energy-efficiency upgrades, and accessibility modifications to low-income homeowners in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Rebuilding Together Philadelphia
Twice a year, Harkins employees participate in Rebuilding Together Philadelphia’s “Block Builds,” which provide much-needed home renovations to low-income inner-city families.
St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore
Harkins has been a long-time sponsor of Empty Bowls, the signature fundraiser of St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore, which provides essential community services to those Baltimore residents who suffer from the effects of hunger, homelessness, and poverty. In addition, bowls hand-painted by Harkins employees are among the 3,500 bowls that are donated to the event.
Villa Maria School and St. Vincent’s Villa
Harkins employees have a very special relationship with Villa Maria School and St. Vincent’s Villa, Catholic Charities programs for children with difficult family backgrounds. Throughout the year our employees coordinate several events to raise funds and to entertain the children, including carnivals, Christmas present collections, and participation in the Dragon Boat chant competition.
