Builders began a safety consciousness long before construction safety was
legislated in 1972. Mr. Harkins, in writing the forward for an early safety
policy wrote, "Accepting our responsibility under this act requires complete
dedication by all employees. I am committing this company to a vigorous program
of occupational safety and health. It is my hope that, through intelligent and
dedicated effort, we will make Harkins a safe place for all employees."

Since
its beginning, Harkins has always strived to provide and maintain working
conditions that promote worker and public safety. This company has always

Harkins'
comprehensive safety program, which is administered by our corporate safety
officer, is founded on the efforts of the individual site construction
management teams. Safety on a Harkins project begins in the project planning
stages even before the first phase of construction gets underway and continues
until "the front door key is turned over to the owner." With heavy emphasis on
safety education and training interwoven in our program, the development and
reinforcement of safety awareness, recognition, and action is actively promoted
throughout the organization and its operations.
